CinePaint 0.21-2 released

CinePaint uses Oyranos for its color management configuration. A button in the preferences dialog is now available to launch the external Oyranos configuration dialog.

The adoption of the Oyranos configuration scheme can create a good user experience while using colour managed applications and libraries. The target is to reach a very predictable behaviour among them.
As a side effect CinePaint uses the X supplied colour profile if set in the server.

Chemnitzer Linux Tage 2006

On the Chemnitzer Linux Tage(n), on 4.und 5. March 2006, this year I will show an open source RIP for PrePress studios.
CinePaint will run site by site with a commercial RIP under Windows.
The PDF’s to be proofed come from the Altona Testsuite. The Altona Testsuite is known for some pitfalls in PDF rendering. By this the PDF capabilities of RIP’s can be easily checked. Come and see yourself.

CinePaint 0.20 released

CinePaint version 0.20 is a major release of the motion pictures deep colour paint and retouching programm.

This release covers the gtk version of CinePaint. While some CinePaint developers maintain this code base, it will be substituted once the new architecture, called Glasgow, is ready to use. Glasgow covers a complete new high performance, highly interoperable scanline core and a new user interface written in FLTK.

Changes:

  • Overall stability has improved.
  • Many bugs where fixed.
  • It should be compilable on linux/osX/Solaris 64-bit and BSD

Colour management changes:

  • Softproofing is introduced. This includes setting of a proofing profile and a switch to mark out of gamut colours.
  • The Gutenprint plug-in uses the proofing profile as default separation
    target.
  • User interface is more clear regarding colourmanaging. Many colour channel labels where adapted.
  • Profile naming suggestions by Chris Murphy where followed. visible in the preferences.
  • Visualisation of single colour channels, selectable in “Layers & Channels” dialog, is better.
  • OpenEXR <-> ICC colour space information is preserved during loading and saving this HDR image format.

HighDynamicRange (HDR) changes:

  • new HDR creation plug-in, see below.
  • The expose item is moved from <imagemenu>->Color->Expose Image to
<imagemenu>->View->Expose. It is now a per window setting, As well the values set in Expose are taken over into Gamma-Expose.
  • PortableFloatMaps are supported for reading. (examples)

New plug-ins where added to the release:

  • Bracketing to HDR - HDR creation from 8-bit images: by Hartmut Sbosny
  • statistic filter: minimum and median by Nicola Montecchiari
  • pnm complet rewrite for 8/16/32 bit raw reading: by Kai-Uwe Behrmann

patches:

  • 1213869 autoconf update to xwd plugin liquidphoto (Tom Hufmann)
  • 1275118 building plug-ins outside source tree liquidphoto

As well Frank Peters provided a collection of curves from the internet.
Although these curves were originally intended for use with Nikon cameras,
they should be of general interesst to correct images from many digital sources.
BSD fixes, suggested by Mika Nystrom and partitial with bug 1164686 by Roland Illig where checked and merged in by Kai-Uwe Behrmann

Some notes about the last minor release 0.19-1:

New plug-ins:
The print plug-in utilises Gutenprint for throughout 16-bit colourmanaged
printing. Note Gutenprint will be colour stable once it lefts behind beta
status. (This should be reached as of version 5.0.0rc1 for most inkjet
printers.)

The collect plug-in allows for selecting a number of images with the same
bit depth and building a layered image from them.

The new ICC Examin plug-in allowes visualisation of actual ICC profiles tags.

The new ICC Watch plug-in allowes viewing image colours in the actual threedimensional CIE*Lab colour space. The Image and Proofing gamut can be included.

Note: the last two plug-ins need the “ICC Examin” application, which is downloadable from http://www.behrmann.name/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=32&Itemid=70
